Making Sure Every Child Has What They Need for School

What began six years ago with just 150 donated school uniform items has grown into a vital, year-round project serving hundreds of families across Colchester and beyond.

Last year alone, we gave out over 15,000 items of clean, good-quality uniform - completely free of charge.

We believe that no child should miss school or feel different because of what they’re wearing. This project exists to remove that barrier quietly and kindly, without judgment or red tape.

Our Impact

In the past year, Essex Free School Uniforms has:

  • Supplied 15,000+ uniform items to children in need

  • Reached 75% of primary and secondary schools in Colchester

  • Attended major community events at Castle Park and Firstsite

  • Secured funding from the Essex Community Foundation to employ a part-time project worker

These results show how a simple act - giving a child the right uniform - can have a large and lasting impact.

How It Works

The service is open to any family in need, and runs with dignity, ease, and discretion.

Here’s how the process works:

  • Items are donated by schools, parents, and local businesses

  • They are sorted and stored by volunteers

  • Families make requests online via our website

  • We respond within 3 working days with collection details

There are no referrals, no forms to justify need, and no judgment. We also welcome donations of clean, reusable school uniform items throughout the year.

Who We Work With

We’re grateful to have the support of local organisations that share our vision for practical, people-first help:

  • Essex Community Foundation - providing key project funding

  • Community 360 (Winter Warmers) - supporting seasonal needs

  • DNA Networks - offering infrastructure, volunteer support, and leadership

Join Us in Supporting Others

As need increases, so must our response. You can help by donating, volunteering, or spreading the word.

Here’s what your donation can do:

  • £5 washes 8kg of uniform, ready to be reused

  • £20 provides a coat or pair of shoes for a child

  • £50 covers two coats, two pairs of shoes, or 2.5 staffing hours

  • £100 supports multiple families, funding items and staffing hours
